Cubic zirconia (CZ) offers a stunning, affordable alternative to genuine diamonds. It is mans closest simulation of the diamond, nearly as durable, and it actually possesses more "fire." CZ makes a great diamond alternative on its own, and it beautifully enhances colored semiprecious gemstones.
The cubic zirconium is a synthetic stone made in laboratories to closely resemble a diamond. It has the same physical and chemical characteristics of the diamond, and is cut and polished in the same manner. Unlike simulated stones made of glass or paste commonly found in less-expensive costume jewelry cubic zirconia is exceptionally long-lasting and radiant. Like diamonds, the best cubic zirconia are colorless, and do not lose their color or brilliance.
To do so, zirconium oxide and yttrium oxide are melted together under extremely hot temperatures. The cooling process produces flawless, clear crystals brilliant and clear in appearance. These rough crystals are then cut and polished, resulting in spectacular, diamond-like dazzlers. CZ also comes in fancy colors, such as red, green and yellow.
Cubic zirconia is measured in carats, just like diamonds. One carat weighs 1/5 of a gram. Measurement can also be expressed in millimeters. However, CZs are heavier than diamonds, so a cubic zirconium stone will weigh 1.7 times more than a diamond of the same millimeter measurement.
