The concept of birthstones has been traced back to at least the first century. Birthstones are based on the idea that a special stone was dedicated to each month, and that it possessed certain virtues or "cures" that could be transmitted to those born in that month. Although few people today may subscribe to those beliefs, there's no denying the special affinity that many individuals feel for their birthstones as extensions of their personality.
