Cubic Zirconium is an ideal substitute for people who don’t want to pay for a real diamond but want to look like they are wearing one! At a tenth of the cost of a diamond, it actually makes a lot of financial sense. Although it has a little less sparkle and brilliance, the cubic zirconium has more color, is very durable and just as beautiful as a diamond at a fraction of the cost! How much does it weigh? About 75% more than loose diamonds, as measured by carat weight.

So how do you tell the difference between cubic zirconium and a diamond? It’s virtually impossible for the untrained eye - one way is to look at cubic zirconium under high magnification, about 10X should do it. With CZ, the facets do not point properly. Unlike a diamond, it is not a straight line where the facets intersect. CZ actually has more rounded facets than the diamonds.

Another way to tell the difference between cubic zirconium and diamonds is by doing a gravity test on an un-mounted stone, marking ink on the top of the stone. With the cubic zirconium, the ink will bead up. Another way is to measure heat conductivity. A diamond will register as green, a cubic zirconium registers red.
